What Size Cylinder Should I Get?

There are many different cylinder sizes available, different brand machines have different size cylinders.  This is why many sock machine owners have more then one machine.  The cylinder size you will use most often will depend largely on the  yarn you use, and the knitted fabric you like.

Some of the more common cylinder sizes are

54 & 60

The 54 and 60 slot cylinders can be used for sock weight yarns and also Sport and Worsted weights.  When using a sock weight yarn in a 54 or a 60 slot cylinder the sock produced will be a average width.  You can also use the thicker yarns in these cylinders as the slots are spaced further apart.  Very nice socks with a Mock Ribbing and  Worsted Weight yarns can be used.   Depending on your machine you may need to use the Large Hook Needles to knit with Worsted Weight.

72 & 80

The 72 and 80 slot cylinders can be used also with sock weight yarns  it will produce a tighter fabric due to more needles.  The knitted fabric produced with these cylinders feel the best on your foot.  Half of the needles can be removed also to create baby socks.

Also there is a company making new cylinders and ribbers, see the Links page for a link to the site for more information.
